QUESTION: What is the Meals on Wheels/Home Delivered Meals (MOW/HDM) Program?

ANSWER: MOW/HDM is a state and federally funded program that provides healthy meals as well as a face-to-face health and safety monitoring check to particiating adults in Allegheny County.

QUESTION: What is the criteria for receiving meals on wheels/home-delivered meals?

ANSWER: You must be a resident of Allegheny County, 60 years of age or older, and you must be unable to shop or prepare your own meals, or recovering from major surgery.

QUESTION: Who do I call to discuss the program?

QUESTION: How many meals a week may I receive and when are they delivered?

ANSWER:
  1. Three (3) hot lunches and two (2) precooked meals to be reheated for  Tuesday & Thursday – Delivered on Monday, Wednesday and Friday (except on holidays).
  2. Seven (7) frozen meals delivered weekly.
  3. Extra food may be purchased at an additional cost.


QUESTION: What is the cost for the meals?  How do I pay for my meals?

ANSWER:
  1. Donations/cost of meals will be discussed upon initial intake due to varying costs.
  2. Donations will be collected weekly, to be paid by check , cash or money order.
  3. A gift of MOW/HDM is a wonderful way to help a neighbor,  honor someone’s memory or as a holiday gift.


QUESTION: How long does it take to start receiving my meals?

ANSWER: Three to five (3-5) business days after the initial intake.

QUESTION: Is there a minimum and/or maximum length of time for receiving MOW/HDM meals?

ANSWER: No – you can receive meals for a couple days, several weeks, or months, depending on your situation.

QUESTION: What if I need to go to the hospital or will be away visiting a relative?

ANSWER: Twenty-Four hour notice is required to cancel meal delivery and to re-start meal delivery.  Call 412-464-1300 Extension 133 or 153.

QUESTION: I am a diabetic and eat a special diet. Can I still get HDM/MOW?

ANSWER: Some special diets available.  A prescription from your physician is required.

QUESTION: How do I know what the menu is for the meals?

ANSWER: Once you are registered and begin receiving meals, a monthly menu is provided to you with your meal delivery.The monthly menu can also be found on our website at www.lifespanpa.org under the Meals on Wheels/Home Delivered Meals Section.

QUESTION: How are the meals delivered?

ANSWER: Meals are delivered by our MOW/HDM delivery staff directly to your home on Monday, Wednesday & Friday (except on holidays) between the hours of 9:30 am and 3:00 pm.All LifeSpan, Inc. staff members must pass a Criminal Background Check prior to employment. Please Note:  Our drivers are required to see the participant personally to deliver the meal.  This is a requirement of the ACAAA for a face-to-face health and safety monitoring check.  Meals will not be left without the participant’s presence, unless otherwise arranged.
